Florida Association of Science Teachers Conference in St Pete Beach
Reed Bowman, the esteemed biologist from Archbold Biological Station and I will be presenting on science and language arts integrated curriculums. Here is the abstract:

Students rarely respond to a “textbook in disguise” approach of using language arts to foster science education. By careful text selection, educators can use the emotion and enthusiasm generated by the story to deepen curiosity about the underlying science. The session presenters will discuss the process of matching text to science curriculum using the example of the middle-grade literary work Olivia Brophie and the Pearl of Tagelus with a Florida nature and science curriculum developed at Archbold Biological Station.

Field Trip with the students of Ivy Hawn Middle School
They read Olivia Brophie in class. Now we are paying a visit to Lyonia Preserve, a scrub nature preserve next to the Deltona Public Library. The 7th and 8th graders get to experience Olivia's world in person. We will be learning about scrub nature and the Floridan Aquifer. I hope we can find some of the animals that inspired characters in the book! I'm really looking forward to the field trip because it will truly integrate the science and language arts.

October 24, 2012
Family Literacy Night at Triangle Elementary, Mt Dora.

September 20, 2012
Book Signing with Danette Haworth - Barnes & Noble Colonial in Orlando 4-8 PM
I'm excited to do a dual book signing with another local author! Danette Haworth has written several great books, Violet Raines Almost Got Struck by Lightning, The Summer of Moonlight Secrets, Me & Jack, and A Whole Lot of Lucky.
Don't miss this chance to meet two authors at one time in what is sure to be a high-energy event!

Look at that pile of books over my shoulder. That's a lot of signing!

I will be reading & talking at Deland Middle School
I talked with six 7th grade classes, split into two groups. I had a great time meeting the kids. Some of them are aspiring authors. One boy showed me the book he is making from pieces of cardboard, masking tape, and torn-up notepaper.
The media specialist decided that Deland Middle School will teach Olivia Brophie and the Pearl of Tagelus next year!

May 10, 2012     4:00 - 8:00 PM
St. Charles Borromeo School Book Fair at Barnes & Noble, Colonial Drive Orlando. Can't wait!
What a great group of people at St. Charles Borromeo School. Everyone was so nice. I really enjoyed meeting the teachers, parents, and kids! I signed over 50 books! Time for a hand massage.

April 28, 2012     Noon - until I'm exhausted
I will be at Books-a-Million in Sanford, Florida for a reading and signing session. If you live in the area or are visiting, please stop by.  I might bring some fossilized evidence that inspired a character in The Pearl of Tagelus...
The Books-a-Million event was awesome. I met a lot of young readers, a few students I have met previously in classroom visits, and some who already read the book and were stopping by for a signature. I also doubled my sales goal!
Here are a few pictures from the event:

April 12, 2012    I will be reading at FLARE: The Flagler Review, COMPLETE
the literary magazine of Flagler College, will mark the publication of its Spring issue with a reading and celebration at the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum on Thursday, April 12 at 5:00. Liz Robbins, Jim Wilson, Dimitri McCloghry, and Athena Sasso will also be reading.  (Crisp-Ellert was a fantastic location for a reading. Elegant and intimate setting. It was a standing-room-only crowd. The Flagler Review is beautifully done and I'm positive that this literary journal is going to be producing talent for some time to come.)

April 10, 2012     Starbooks Cafe at Ivy Hawn School  COMPLETE
I'm excited to listen to the students of Ivy Hawn read and present their literary works. (What a great visit. The students at Ivy Hawn were great hosts. Artwork everywhere. Homemade treats. Coffee. And their poems and stories were fantastic. I'm so happy to have been a part of their celebration. I just know that there are future writers in that group!)
